What is Pharmacology?

Pharmacology provides a modern understanding of how medicines produce their effects on the body and how such knowledge is used to alleviate suffering caused by disease. It encompasses the sources, chemical properties, biological effects and therapeutic uses of drugs.

Pharmacology integrates the knowledge of many disciplines, including medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, and veterinary medicine; resulting in unique and significant contributions to human health.

Potential new drugs are often identified through:

  • New insights into a disease process
  • The testing of molecular compounds to find possible benefits
  • Existing treatments that have unanticipated effects
  • New technologies that provide alternate ways to target medicines to specific sites within the body

Once a potential compound has been identified, researchers conduct experiments within a cleanroom or laboratory to gather information on:

  • How the body will respond to the drug, across different demographics
  • Potential benefits
  • Dosages
  • The best method of administering the drug
  • Potential side effects
  • How it interacts with other drugs

A Biora Pharmacology Laboratory can be built to accommodate the specific research requirements to ensure a cleanroom space the meets the industry standards and configuration needs of the application.
